bread bowls

I have always been a HUGE fan of bread bowls, so I thought why not just go ahead and try and make my own, and what do you know, they are easy as heck and really good! They are so versatile and can be used for everything from breakfast to dinner and anything in between!

4 1/2 teaspoons yeast

2 1/4 cups warm water

2 teaspoons sugar

2 teaspoons salt

2 tablespoons olive oil

6 cups flour

1 egg for wash

pour the water over yeast in the mixmaster bowl, let it sit covered with a towel for 5 mins

then add the sugar, salt, olive oil, and 4 cups of flour, mix on slow for a couple of mins, then add the 2 remaining cups of flour and beat on low for about 5 mins

the dough should be thick and soft, and a little sticky, if its too sticky a tablespoon of flour and mix until it pulls away from the sides of the bowl

turn it onto a lightly floured surface and then place it into a large greased bowl turning once to grease the top. Cover the bowl with plastic wrap and place in a warm spot for 90 mins

once the dough has doubled in size punch down the dough to release any air bubbles, remove from the bowl and turn it out onto a lightly floured surface and punch down to release any more air bubbles

cut dough into 6 even pieces, and form into balls, i personally do mine into 4 pieces for bigger bowls, but you can experiment and figure out what’s best for you and what you want to serve.

place the balls onto lined baking sheets and cover lightly, let rest for 20 mins

preheat oven to 400

after 20 mins brush the balls with egg wash and using a sharp knife score an X into the tops of each

bake for 30 mins

let cool and then when you’re ready to use them cut open and they are ready to use for whatever you want

enjoy!

also, i refrigerate the extra dough and use it in the next few days, we only need two bowls, but make sure you let it set with the others before you put it away.
